Implicit association, the work of conscious control, and culture change:
We have worked diligently to understand behavior of individuals. There have been tools, such as the Implicit Association Test (IAT), which have helped us understand hidden elements of how our brain works. The Center for Diversity and the Environment's (CDE) Theory of Change takes this even further - that in order for change to happen, it must occur at the individual, interpersonal/relational and systems levels of organizations. One of the challenges that we’ve faced with the IAT is that we blame individuals in difficult times and spaces. People often believe that if we remove the “bad” individuals, we will solve the problem. And time and time again, we have seen that this has not created the desired change. CDE explores the impact of the research around the IAT and the solutions to address culture change.
